Barcelona at Night: Best Things to Do

Barcelona at night what to do

1. Go on a Tapa Food Tour

Tapas is easily one of my favorite things about Spain. There are so many & all so delicious. I would go crazy over some Patatas Bravas!

So, why not try the best tapas in the city?! Book a tapa food tour & not only eat some delicious food but meet some people while you’re at it.

    2. Listen to Live Music

Another fantastic way to enjoy Barcelona at night is to find some live music. Listening to live music just does good for the soul & it’s so fun to see the talented local artists. And there are all kinds of music, so find a place that plays your favorite tunes.

These are some of the best places to listen to live music around Barcelona:

    • Sala Apolo – one of the oldest live music venues known for hosting artists like Kings of Leon & Coldplay.
    • Sidecar – hosts both concerts & DJ sessions.
    • Razzmatazz – an international music venue where both local & international musicians perform.

*There are many others, so do your research! And if you’re in town for a while, try a new one every night.

    3. Sweat it Out on the Dancefloor.

This next activity goes hand in hand with listening to live music. If you’re going to a venue with live music, you may as well dance while you’re at it!

Dancing with your friends (or even strangers) is an excellent way to spend the night in my book. Just make sure you’re wearing the right shoes…

The live music venues I mentioned up top are excellent spots for going dancing. But here are a few more:

*Bonus tip: I would avoid Opium. While it is a ‘trendy’ club, it’s incredibly crowded & super touristy, the perfect conditions for pickpocketers

    10. Catch a Futbol Game at Camp Nou

I highly recommend catching a futbol game at Camp Nou, even if you aren’t a sports fan! I had a blast at the game I went to, even though I don’t keep up with sports. At all…

Why was it such a great time? The atmosphere!

The atmosphere & vibe of the crowd at futbol games are wild. With so much energy packed in that stadium, you will easily get sucked into cheering & shouting even if you have no idea what’s going on. 15. Visit La Sagrada Familia

So, if you haven’t been to the La Sagrada Familia yet or would like to explore it without the crowds, you’ll definitely want to block off an evening to visit.

    You can find tickets here.

    16. Go See a Movie

Go catch a movie! This is a tremendous solo date or something fun to do with friends. I have very few memories of not enjoying myself at the movies.

**Funny story: Don’t be like me! A friend and I went to see a movie one night in Barcelona, and we had just gone to a popular theater in the neighborhood. However, we completely forgot we were in Spain. And, naturally, the movie was in Spanish. And no, there were no subtitles.

That was probably the most American thing  I’ve ever done. 🤦🏾

However! There are movie theaters in Barcelona that play movies in English. Do your research before booking your ticket so you don’t want to end up like me.

    17. Go See the  La Pedrera Night Experience

The UNESCO-listed La Pedrera is quite the experience during the night. You can see the architect’s stunning work & then head up top to learn more about Gaudi himself. Then, you can see the stars & city on top of the roof.

This is another excellent activity with friends or on a solo trip. So, if you’re into architecture, spend the evening exploring some of Gaudi’s most impressive work.

    19. Take a Stroll on One of Barcelona’s Beautiful Beaches

The beaches in Barcelona are beautiful! Taking a lovely, intimate walk on the beach is one of the best date night ideas. There’s something about going on a walk with someone that is so cathartic. You learn about each other with no distractions &  the sway of the waves in the background – my kind of date.

So, if you’re looking for a romantic and free way to spend your night in Barcelona, walking on the beach is the perfect activity.

    Magic Fountain light show, Barcelona

    20. Watch the Light Show at Montjuic Fountain

Another excellent free thing to do in Barcelona at night is to watch the light show at the Montjuic Fountain. Eating ice cream while watching the light show is so lovely on a warm summer night.

This is also a family-friendly activity; kids love seeing the lights & the water.

What time is the show? There are usually two showings a night, each lasting about 15-20 minutes. The first showing is at 8 pm & the last one is generally around 8:30 pm.

*Note: Show times can change depending on the time of year, so check before visiting.

    21. See an Outdoor Movie at One of Barcelona’s Film Festivals

Lastly, catching an outdoor movie is one of the best things to do in Barcelona at night. Barcelona is known for having summer film festivals, so there are plenty of options to catch a film. Some showings are free, while others may cost a few euros – something to remember when searching for one.

But this is an excellent way to spend your summer nights in Barcelona, with friends and family, or just as a date with yourself.

*Note: this movie will likely be in Spanish; unless you’re fluent in Spanish, it may be hard to understand. And no, they will not likely be showing English subtitles.

     Barcelona By Night FAQs

    Is Barcelona safe at night?

Yes, the city is safe at night, but you’ll want to monitor your surroundings.

Barcelona, in general, is quite a safe city; major crime is rare. The biggest thing you’ll want to watch out for is pickpocketers.

Can you walk around Barcelona at night?

Yes, you can definitely walk around Barcelona at night with no problems. I’ve done it many times before and have never felt unsafe. However! You should always proceed with caution when walking around at night, keeping a close eye on your surroundings.

Also, be mindful of the area you’re in. As with any city, Barcelona has specific places that should be avoided at night, which leads me to the next question…

Where to avoid in Barcelona at night?

While Barcelona is super fun to explore at night, there are some areas you should definitely avoid. While fine during the day, these areas become sketchy at night.

Here are the areas you will want to be highly cautious of or avoid altogether (especially when traveling solo) during nighttime:

    • El Raval
    • Las Ramblas
    • The Gothic Quarter
    • El Born
    • La Mina

Additionally, you want to proceed with caution when riding the metro at night. Avoid sitting in empty compartments & keep a close eye on your possessions.

How late is dinner in Barcelona?

Spaniards eat much later than typical Americans. Dinner in Barcelona is usually between 9 and 10 pm. And on the weekends, it can be even later than that.

However, you can still find restaurants to dine in if you’re an early eater.

How late do people stay out in Barcelona?

A night out can go late. Dinner starts at 9 or 10 pm. Then bars and clubs usually open around midnight and don’t close until 6 am!

I must admit, even when I was into the bar & club scene, I could NOT hang out until 6 am. Not only did my feet start to hurt, but I also started to get hungry by 2-3 hours in, lol.

Extra Safety Tips While Out in Barcelona at Night

Here are just a few more helpful tips to remember when enjoying Barcelona’s nightlife:

Ensure at least 1-2 people know where you’re going (at all times).

    1. Don’t get intoxicated! Especially if you’re traveling alone. You want to have a sober mind when you’re out because anything can happen. So, go easy on the drinks.
    2. Try to avoid walking alone at night. Instead, call an Uber or taxi to take you to where you’re staying.
    3. Keep an eye on your belongings.
    4. Have fun!

So, as you have read, there is so much to explore in Barcelona at night. Even if you don’t stay out til 6 am, I recommend trying at least 2 or 3 of these fun activities.

The fun shouldn’t stop just because it gets dark! Just as long as you have fun safely.

Sending you much love & wishing you safe & happy travels.
