Leave some wiggle room.
One of the best ways to limit frustration when plans don’t go according to plan is to leave some wiggle room. By this, I’m referring to downtime or breathing room between activities and sightseeing. This way, you have time to gather your thoughts and adjust without needing to rush to the next part of your day. This tiny suggestion will save you a major headache.
Now that you have extra time, you can decide your next step. If the activity you missed is a must on your list, try rescheduling it for another time. Once that’s done, you can find other excursions to fill your time. This leads me to my next tip…
Have some backup activities in mind.
I can almost guarantee that something will not go as planned during your trip, but that’s OK! I’ve learned that some of the best adventures happen spontaneously. I’ve also learned that it’s best to have some backup activities in mind for this very occasion. These could be things you didn’t initially have time for, like shopping or taking a walk in the local botanical gardens. Maybe you didn’t schedule any time to lay on the beach – this is the perfect opportunity to do so!
Or these backup activities could be things you enjoy doing back home. In most cases, you’ll be able to find something similar in whatever city you’re traveling to. This list of alternate experiences is an excellent way to adjust & still enjoy your day when your original plans fall through.

Go exploring.
If you don’t have a list of backup activities, explore the city! This gives you a chance to take in the culture & scenery of the location you’re visiting at your own pace. You’d be surprised how much fun it is to experience the city as the locals do. And you might even find something that really piques your interest.
Another tip: some cities have free walking tours, which is a great way to meet people and learn more about the area. I highly recommend doing one if your plans get canceled.
Try out a new restaurant.
And my last tip: when all else fails, find a new restaurant to try. I love eating, but I love experiencing others’ cultures through food even more than that. So, I’m always down to try out new cuisines. This is an excellent way to fill your time, and it’s so much fun!
If you’re feeling really adventurous, see if you can find some local food tours. Not only will you be able to try some fantastic food, but you’ll likely meet others while doing it!
Be open to the unexpected.
Your trip doesn’t have to end just because things didn’t go as planned. The overall theme of all the tips I’ve shared on how to adjust when your plans don’t go accordingly is to be open to the unexpected. Now you might get lucky, and everything does go as planned, but usually, that’s not the case. But that’s ok because life is messy. Some of your best memories will be from the times when things didn’t happen as planned.
How do you adjust when your travel plans don’t go accordingly?
I’m eager to hear how you all adapt. Let me know in the comments below!
