As somewhat of a pro at finding hot destinations worldwide, I’m giving you 10 warm places to visit in December to escape the dreary cold.
You’ll learn about destinations all over the world, from the US to Australia and beyond.
After learning about all these places, you won’t have to spend another winter locked inside because of the cold (unless, of course, you want to!).

1. Auckland, New Zealand
Auckland, New Zealand, is the first warm place to travel to in December this year. While it’s winter during this time in the US, or for anyone in the northern hemisphere, December is the beginning of the summer months in New Zealand. So, naturally, you can expect loads of hot days and sunshine.
Auckland is the perfect destination for an extra beach getaway, with plenty of opportunities for surfing or lying on the beach. December is also a great time to hike up Mercer Bay Loop Walk before it gets too hot.
All in all, New Zealand is a beautiful place to spend your winter this year!
2. Jamaica
Winter is the perfect excuse to travel to Jamaica. Not that you need one, though.
Unfortunately, many others are thinking this as well. December happens to be the start of Jamaica’s peak season.
However, the weather is fantastic, with temperatures hovering around 84 degrees Fahrenheit and little to no rainfall. Perfect weather for any vacation.
As the party capital of the Caribbean, you can expect lots of parties, festivals, and celebrations in Jamaica. And it’s a fun place to be during the New Year. But if party life isn’t your thing, Jamaica has several beaches to give you a more laid-back experience.
3. Sri Lanka
This next winter travel destination is highly underrated. Still, Sri Lanka is absolutely lovely in December and would be well worth the visit!
The western and southern coasts are ideal for visiting during this time as the heavy rainfall has passed. And lying in its wake is the beautiful lush countryside and bright blue skies.
This stunning island offers gorgeous beaches, ancient ruins, mesmerizing cities, beautiful temples, and a variety of wildlife. While underrated, Sri Lanka will captivate you with its beauty and culture and leave you wanting more.

4. New Orleans, Louisana
New Orleans is one of the top warm places to visit in the US. December in New Orleans is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, with holiday events and activities, NOLA’s famous cuisine, and yummy cocktails; it’s the place to be.
Because of the holidays, you can expect large holiday parades like Jingle on the Boulevard, impressive light shows like the Celebration in the Oaks, Christmas Eve bonfires, and so much more.
If you want to be merry and mingle with other people, New Orleans is definitely the spot for you this winter.
5. Sydney, Australia
Sydney, Australia, is another destination located in the southern hemisphere. So, you know what that means. Our winter is their summer!
I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely down for a second summer vacay.
However, due to Christmas and New Year celebrations, Sydney attracts loads of tourists. But if you can get past the crowds, you’re in for a blast.
Besides holiday events, there are many activities like hiking, dolphin watching, swimming, visiting the Sydney Opera House, and much more!
6. Key West, Florida
Key West, Florida, is one of the best winter vacations in the US. Lots of gorgeous weather, plenty of water activities, and opportunities to relax. There are even family-friendly activities to explore if you happen to be vacationing with the whole family!
The perfect weather creates wonderful opportunities to get outside and enjoy all Key West’s outdoor activities, like snorkeling, diving, and more.
And if you want to get festive while you’re there, there are plenty of chances. Check out the annual Lighted Boat Parade and many New Year’s celebrations around the town.

7. Oahu, Hawaii
Hawaii is a great place to visit any time because the weather is fabulous year-round. But December brings super large waves to the Oahu shores, making it a surfer’s dream vacation. So, if you enjoy suffering, this is the spot for you.
Like other spots on this list, Oahu tends to get a bit busier towards the end of the month due to the holiday season. And December happens to be Hawaii’s rainest time of year.
BUT! That shouldn’t deter you because the rains come in short bursts and usually last 15 minutes at most. So if you can get past the rain & the crowds, Hawaii is where you want to spend winter this year.
8. Puerto Rico
Another warm place to visit in December without a passport is Puerto Rico.
Known for its warm hospitality, gorgeous views, and delicious food, Puerto Rico is a hotspot for travelers. And it’s no surprise why. The live music and dancing will make you want to make friends with the locals and immerse yourself in the rich culture.
Plus, as it’s December, there are many holiday events and celebrations to get in the holiday spirit for Christmas and New Year’s.
9. The Canary Islands
Right off the African coast, the next location is The Canary Islands.
The weather is lovely; so great the water is warm enough to swim in. And you know what that means! Water sports galore.
Besides swimming in the ocean, hiking, golfing, and wine tasting are other fun activities to get involved in.
The Canary Islands is a great spot to escape the cold this winter.
