How to Make Friends Abroad
Volunteer
The first tip on how to make friends abroad is to volunteer. The best chance of making friends, abroad or at home, is to put yourself in a situation with other people. And volunteering is not only the perfect way to meet others, but you help people in the process.
A win-win situation.
The best way to find volunteer opportunities in your area is to simply research on the internet or ask your travel agent if you have one. Social media is also a good resource for finding volunteering opportunities. Facebook groups specifically.
Try the Meetup Website
Another option for making friends is the Meetup website/app. This is an excellent way to find a social event where you can mingle with others in your area. In addition, you can search for your favorite hobby on the website, which is ideal for finding people with similar interests.
Or be adventurous and try a new hobby. Meetup is ideal for exploring the outdoors with others and simply networking with people that share some of your interests.
The meetup is an excellent resource for finding abroad friends, and you definitely need to add it to your arsenal.
Find a Language Exchange Partner
A language exchange program is a way to learn a new language with a local through conversation. The exchange portion of the program is where you both take turns helping the other learn a language.
So, you’ll start speaking in one language, then switch to another. Not only is this a fantastic opportunity to learn a language, but an excellent chance to make a new friend, as you’ll be spending time with your partner frequently.
You can use apps and websites to find an exchange partner. Or your study abroad program will likely know of a nice language exchange program. So, make sure to tap into that resource as well.

Facebook Groups & Events
Finding Facebook groups and events is a pro solo travel tip you need to add to the list! Some may think Facebook is dead, but I assure you it’s not.
Events are always happening, and you can find them in a quick Facebook search. And I would suggest going a step further and joining a local Facebook group. So this way, you can stay up-to-date on the events.
And as an added bonus, you can likely find someone to go with you when you’re in a group.
Stay in a Hostel
Hostels are a fantastic way to meet new people! And they’re much cheaper than hotels, so you’d be saving money!
I recommend this option for younger solo travelers solely because hostels are easier to stay in when you’re younger. And by that, I mean younger travelers don’t usually mind sharing sleeping quarters. Whereas you’re more set in your preferences when you’re older.
That certainly doesn’t mean older travelers can’t take advantage of hostels. If you’re ok with the accommodations, hostels are an excellent opportunity to make friends with other travelers.
Do Activities You Enjoy
One of the best ways to make friends is by finding local events with activities you enjoy. This way, you meet people with similar interests as you. And having similar interests breaks the ice and helps you create a connection with others.
Social media like Instagram and Facebook and apps like Meetup are perfect for finding activities you enjoy in your area. And if you happen to be traveling with a company, they will likely know of local events as well.

Try a New Hobby
Additionally, trying a new hobby is another excellent tip for solo female travelers on how to make friends abroad. Doing a new hobby in a group setting is perfect for meeting new people, and even if you don’t make a new friend, you at least learn something new.
Sometimes it’s harder to make new friends in an unfamiliar setting. But just remember, this should be a fun and adventurous experience. So, don’t put too much pressure on yourself; just have fun!
Join An Expat Group
Expat groups allow you to meet others and share your travel experiences. You can usually find an expat group to join in areas with many expats and non-native people living in the country.
Expat groups are a wonderful way to connect with others when you’re missing your family & friends. Plus, these groups have a wealth of knowledge about your area (and probably other spots too).
Go to a Bar or Coffee Shop
Another tip for making friends abroad is going to local bars or coffee shops.
Sitting at the bar is an excellent way to converse with other solo travelers or locals! Either spark a conversation with your bartender or someone next to you. I’ve had some of the best talks at bartops.
Alternately, coffee shops are equally good for finding someone to chat with. And sometimes, if you’re lucky, you might meet someone you have an instant connection with!
Put Yourself Out There
Making friends, especially abroad requires you to put yourself out there, which can be super intimidating. But I can assure you, it is definitely worth the risk, and the good news is that it gets easier the more you do it.
Remember, your only requirement is to show up and be yourself. The rest will work itself out. There are many solo travelers in the world, and they’re looking for friends just like you are.
So be brave, be present, and be yourself. You got this!
Wishing you safe & happy travels.
