Best Weekend Getaways in March
Barbados
Barbados is an excellent destination if you’re looking for a warmer location. Fortunately, March just happens to be right in the middle of peak season because the rains are few & between. On the flip side, however, this is a popular time for folks visiting, so you may experience some crowds.
Besides the fantastic weather, Barbados welcomes every type of traveler – the foodie, adventure junkie, explorer, and those that just want to relax. And whether you’re embarking on a solo trip, a girls’ weekend, or a fun vacation with your significant other, you will most definitely enjoy yourself.
What else can you expect in Barbados? Water sports, outdoor activities, delicious food, beautiful waters, and UNESCO sites await you on your adventure to the Caribbean.
What to do in Barbados:
- Swim with the turtles
- Spend the evening sailing on the Caribbean Sea
- Explore the rainforests
- Find a beach and soak up the sun
Costa Rica
This next destination might be on top of the list for spontaneous, romantic weekend getaways with bae. I don’t know; something about the Spanish vibes makes you want to cuddle up with your partner.
But it’s also great for a girls’ or even a solo trip. (Anywhere is an excellent spot for a solo vacation, honestly). The only not-so-exciting thing about this is that everyone thinks so too. So, you expect large crowds.
But if you can get past the crowds, you’re in for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation!
Costa Rica has everything you could ever need on vacation: delicious food, water sports, the beach, and beautiful nature.
What to do in Costa Rica:
- Go snorkeling & scuba diving
- Try canyoning in the rainforest (recommended: thrill seekers only)
- Take a cooking class
- Explore a volcano
London, England
The next weekend getaway in March to explore is London, England. While London isn’t a hot, tropical beach, it is full of fun attractions, historical sites, delicious food, and more. And March is the last chance you’ll get to enjoy it carefree before the crowds start coming in.
Not to mention, spring is in full swing in the city during March. So, the parks and gardens around London are an absolute pleasure to walk through.
I highly recommend London to anyone who has been dying to go but hasn’t been yet. And while you can’t get everything crammed into just one weekend, you can plan ahead to make sure you get the most out of your visit.
What to do in London:
- Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by watching the parade in central London
- Watch the Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace
- Spend the day exploring the London Museums

Cape Town, South Africa
March in South Africa is truly the best. As the country heads into fall, the weather is not too hot or cold. I don’t know about you, but the temperature can significantly influence my willingness to adventure out sometimes. You won’t have to worry about that during this trip.
Because it’s more on the warmer side, there are several beaches to explore. Plus, there are loads of outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, surfing, and much more.
Additionally, two of the country’s biggest festivals happen in March: the Klein-Karoo National Arts Festival and Cape Town Jazz Festival. You can expect lots of beautiful colors, dancing, music, visual arts, and an overall happy & festive atmosphere.
If you’re considering a solo trip to Cape Town, you may question whether it’s safe, especially if you’re a female. While the city has a high crime rate, it is absolutely a safe location if you take the proper precautions. As with any destination, make sure you do your research & make sure you’re always aware of you’re surroundings.
What to do in Cape Town:
- Chill with penguins on Boulders Beach
- Take a scenic drive on Chapman’s Peak Drive
- Hit the beach
- Hike Table Mountain
Porto, Portugal
Spring is absolutely in Porto; the flowers & trees bloom, and the weather is warmer. Everyone is excited to be out & about. And the air is buzzy with new & exciting energy.
Plus, March is right before the significant flux of tourists comes in, so hotel prices are lower.
The gorgeous Old Town has the most beautiful colors, and you won’t want to leave when you see it lit up at night on the Duoro River. With this city’s romantic vibes, this is definitely a romantic weekend getaway.
However, this is an excellent opportunity for all the singles to embark on a solo adventure as well. Just depends on the mood you’re in.
What to do in Porto:
- Go on a sightseeing boat tour
- Catch the sunset at the Luís I Bridge
- Try out some of Porto’s best port
- Explore the most beautiful library in the world: Livraria Lello
New York City
NYC in March is an excellent option if you’re traveling on a budget. It still happens to be in the slow season, and flight & hotel prices tend to be slightly lower. Also, the seasons are transitioning in March, so some days might be warmer, while you will need to bundle up on others. So make sure to pack accordingly.
Because March is a transitional period for NYC, you get the best of both worlds. You’ll find winter activities like the Bryant Park Winter Village and spring activities like exploring the Orchid Show in the NYC Botanical Gardens.
While you can make New York a romantic getaway or a girls’ trip, this destination is probably best for a solo vacation. The city actually seems to have been designed specifically for solo travelers. Believe it or not, many people do things by themselves in NYC, whether they’re visiting or happen to live there. So, you’ll fit right in!
What to do in New York City:
- Catch a Broadway show
- Explore the NYC Museums
- Go ice skating at Bryant Park Winter Village or the Rockefeller Center.
- Watch a basketball game at March Madness
Big Sur
The Big Sur is one of the best weekend trips in the US, and it’s hard to believe it’s even in the States.
Big Sur is the best destination to explore and relax in nature. With several beaches, state parks, and gorgeous views, you’ll undoubtedly be immersed in nature. The California coastline is not one that you’ll likely forget anytime soon.
Besides the views and nature adventures, you can also be in charming cities like Carmel and Monterey in just a few minutes. So, when you get tired of the outdoorsy stuff, you can head into town and explore all they offer.
Both cities have several delicious dining options, shopping centers, and attractions. So, be sure to check them out!
What to do in the Big Sur:
- Go on a nature walk at the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park
- Get a picture by the Bixby Creek Bridge
- Drive down the Old Coast Road
- Go Whale Watching
New Orleans
And lastly, on the list of weekend getaways in March is New Orleans, Louisiana. New Orleans is the place to be if you’re looking for the ultimate girls’ trip! So go ahead and call your girls up now! Plus, March is one of the best times to explore New Orleans without the crowds.
Although February is the month for the ever-so-popular Mardi Gras, March is the season of spring festivals. Music festivals, food festivals, and the Irish Channel Parade are just a little of what you can expect.
It goes without saying there are plenty of things to do in New Orleans.
Not only is Nola an excellent place to spend your spring break, but it has out-of-this-world food. The city has terrific restaurants; you could easily make the whole weekend a foodie vacation. If you happen to be visiting during the end of March, check out the Hogs for the Cause food festival, where you can get some of the best BBQ!
What to do in New Orleans:
- Explore the French Quarter
- Visit the New Orleans Museum of Art
- Eat some yummy beignets
- Take a swamp tour
