beautiful beach towns in Spain

Sitges, Catalonia

The first coastal town on the list is Sitges, which is only a short distance from Barcelona. The city can best be described as the city of artists, as it’s well-known for its artistic history and community. Many legends like Salvador Dalí are known to have worked there. So, needless to say, you can definitely expect to find stunning art from the local region and around the world, showcased in galleries, museums, and studios.

Besides the fantastic art, Sitges has no shortage of scenic beaches, with roughly 17 in the entire city. Talk about the perfect place for beach hopping!

Visitors and locals can be found on any of the following beaches: La Fragata, Sant Sebastia, and Ribera Beach. And if you are really feeling adventurous, join some of the naturalists on the city’s nudist beaches, Balmins and Cala Morisca Beach.

Barcelona

Now you can’t visit Sitges without at least spending a day in Barcelona. However, if I’m being honest, you’ll want to stay much longer than that. Barcelona is only about 45 minutes from Sitges and can be easily accessed by the train station.

The capital of Catalonia is home to several beaches spread across 2.8 miles, the most popular being Barceloneta Beach. This beach sits next to the Olympic Port, so you can expect loads of ships, shops, and people. Besides chilling at the beach, many bike or rollerskate on the boardwalk. So much fun to be had!

Barcelona was the city I was based in during my study abroad experience. And naturally, it has a piece of my heart. So, I feel compelled to share a little more about what this beautiful city has to offer.

Spanish coastal towns

Barcelona has the best of both worlds, the beach, and mountains! Not to mention the diverse neighborhoods that fill the city, each with its own unique stores & restaurants. Exploring the different districts is like visiting a whole other town, which is quite the experience.

Whether you go to the beach or simply explore the city, Barcelona is worth visiting!

Other beaches to explore in Barcelona:

  • Sant Sebastià Beach
  • Mar Bella Beach
  • Ocata Beach
  • Bogatell Beach
  • Nova Icària Beach

Málaga

Resting in the South of Spain, right on the border, sits one of the most beautiful places in Spain by the sea, Málaga. The incredible city offers travelers a whole mix of things to get into from its historical monuments, diverse museums, flamenco dancers, and stunning beaches. And not to mention the near-perfect weather all year long; no wonder Pablo Picasso made it home!

Like the other cities on the list, Málaga has several beaches, as the town lies on the sea. But the most popular is Playa de la Malagueta because of its proximity to the city. You’ll find numerous cafes, restaurants, and beach bars near La Malagueta, giving you many options to elevate your perfect beach day with good eateries.

And it’s only 20 minutes from the city’s historic center, Plaza de la Constitución. So when you’re finished soaking up the sun at the beach, take a stroll in the plaza, and you might just catch some flamenco dancers.

Palma, Mallorca

Palma is the capital of the Spanish Island Mallorca and is simply an excellent location for a beach holiday. From the delicious food (at a low price!), insane nightlife, shopping scene, and gorgeous stretch of sandy beaches, Palma is the place for a good time.

Founded by the Romans in 124 BC, Palma has a long and rich history, which is easily evidenced by the monuments and overall design of the city. The Royal Palace is an excellent example of that long-stated history. It was built during Roman rule, but you can see the Muslim influence that the city experienced when the leadership changed. If history excites you, I would recommend exploring the palace!

Here are some of the best beaches to check out in Palma:

  • Calo Des Moro
  • Platja de Palma
  • Playa de Cala Mayor

Ibiza

Next on the list of beautiful places in Spain by the Sea is Ibiza. The location is especially great for anyone looking to party, as this city is well-known for its CRAZY party scene.

However, despite Ibiza being the top party destination in Europe, it’s also a fantastic spot for those wanting to chill and enjoy the beautiful scenic areas of the Mediterranean. You just have to know the right places to look for!

Here are some relaxing beaches to enjoy in Ibiza:

  • Cala Carbó
  • Cala Olivera
  • Pou des Lleó

Whether you choose one beach town in Spain or hop around to several, you will have a blast! The beautiful country of Spain is waiting for you to explore it, so hop to it!

As always, safe travels.
