Best Places to Travel Alone in the World

1. Dublin, Ireland

Temple Bar in Dublin

First on the list is the ever-so-charming Dublin, Ireland. I must admit, ever since the movie Leap Year came out, I’ve been dying to go to Ireland. The lush green lands, strong Irish accents, and stunning architecture captivated me from the very first moment, and I had to experience it myself.

This medieval city is doused in rich history, with castles and cathedrals scattered all over the city. Not to mention the literary history found there. So if you’re interested in some of Dublin’s most famous writers, be sure to check out the Dublin Literary Pub Crawl

This surprisingly multicultural city is full of unexpected fun and adventure. So whether you’re enjoying a pint at Dublin’s most iconic bar or touring the ancient cathedrals, Dublin is undoubtedly one of the best places to travel alone in the world.

Bonus tip: If you are planning a trip here, make sure to take a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher. One of the most beautiful views you won’t want to miss!

2. Dubrovnik, Croatia

Best Places to Travel Alone in the World

Dubrovnik is one of the last walled-in cities in the world and a top-rated destination to visit, and for good reason too. The gorgeous landscape is enough to have you traveling every year just to get a peek at these outrageous views. Can you say Instagram-worthy photos?!

The narrow, cobblestoned streets of Dubrovnik will have you imagining yourself in a medieval movie as you explore each part of the city. However, suppose you really want to get into character. In that case, you HAVE to visit some of the well-noted Game of Thrones filming sites like the Lovrijenac fortress and Dubrovnik West Pier.

Yes, you read that right. Dubrovnik is one of the many locations in which the hit show Game of Thrones was filmed. The city just so happens to be Kings Landing!

Other awesome things to do in Dubrovnik include walking the city walls, which would take about two hours if you complete the entire loop. As well as exploring the Old Town or hopping on a cable car for an epic aerial view.

There is much fun to be had in Dubrovnik.

3. Queenstown, New Zealand

Calling to all the travelers that love a thrilling adventure! Queenstown, New Zealand, is the adventure capital of the world. So if you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, you’ll definitely find it here.

Queenstown is where the extreme sport of commercial bungee jumping started. A very daring bunch, I say. Other lively activities include skiing & snowboarding, sky diving, white water rafting, and much more.

When you’re not pushing past your fears with these heart-pounding activities, you might also enjoy the friendly locals around the town. This is always a plus when traveling solo and wanting to mingle a bit. The city prides itself on its warm hospitality, making it super easy to befriend a friendly face or two.

And as a HUGE bonus, they speak English! This is really great for the English speakers that want a break from the hassle of a language barrier.

Good ole’ America! Next on the list of best places to travel alone in the world is New York, New York. 〈I may be biased, but I believe just about everywhere in the States is a great place to travel.〉 But if you are going on a solo adventure in the States, New York is the place to do it.

With an insanely diverse culture and many entertainment options, travelers are in for a real treat here. One of the best food scenes globally, the restaurants of New York do not disappoint. Try out a food tour while you’re here to get the low down on the best tastes of the city.

Or catch a glimpse of the talented actors at the famous Broadway Theater

New York is one of those places you must experience for yourself! It has an energy unlike any place I’ve ever been to.

They don’t call it the city that never sleeps for no reason. People are literally going about their business 24 hours a day. Come join ‘em!

5. Marrakech, Morocco

cheap solo vacations

The red city, known for its luxury, Marrakech, is full of famous palaces, luxury spas, and fine dining. So if you’re looking for a luxury solo trip, this destination has everything you need to live the high life. However, you can also experience Marrakech if you’re traveling on a budget!

While here, you can dive into the Morrocan culture by exploring the enclosed old city, Medina (the red walls give the city its nickname as the red city).  As you’re getting lost in Medina’s narrow streets, visit the top monuments, the famous Jemaa El Fna square, Royal Palace, and the Koutoubia, the largest mosque in the city.

After learning more about the Morrocan culture, fill your belly up with their delicious cuisine. You can expect lots of tasty street food in Marrakech, so go crazy!

6. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Best Weekend Trips from London by Train

Welcome to the Dutch capital, Amsterdam. This city offers loads of history, food, beer, and bikes! If you’ve been looking for a reason to purchase a bike, visiting Amsterdam is a good enough reason. Biking is extremely popular here and one of the main ways to get around here.

Another popular way of transport is by boat on the canal. Nicknamed the Venice of the North, Amsterdam has 165 canals throughout the city. So make sure you hop on a boat ride on the canal! It’s a great way to see the city.

The city is also well-known for its multiple brewers, especially the most popular, the Heineken Factory, where many travelers enjoy learning about the making of this particular beer.

And if you want to learn more about Dutch culture or explore the vast amount of art, visit some of the many museums located in the city. Here are a few of the more popular ones:

    • Rijksmuseum: museum of the Netherlands.
    • Van Gogh Museum: an art museum dedicated to the artwork and life of Vincent van Gogh.

7. Edinburgh, Scotland

Best Places to Travel Alone in the World

Talk about medieval times. The dark, gloomy buildings transport you back to the dark ages. 〈If you can’t tell, I love creating a good story with the location!〉 So, naturally, when I visited Edinburgh, the old buildings and cobblestone streets gave me the backdrop I needed to create my story!

The small Old Town is full of history that can be seen just by looking at the Gothic architecture of the buildings. You can view more of this incredible architecture by taking a quick stroll down the Royal Mile and through the many alleyways.

The city also has a fun and thriving nightlife that you wouldn’t expect in such a small town. I tried out a pub crawl on my solo trip to meet people, and I had a blast.

Best Places to Travel Alone in the WorldAlso, you should know that Edinburgh is where J.K. Rowling wrote a lot of the first two Harry Potter books. And the Edinburgh Castle is rumored to have been the inspiration for the look of the Hogwarts Castle! So if you’re a Harry Potter fan and want to nerd out at the fact J.K. Rowling actually lived and wrote here, you have to visit!

8. Guanajuato Mexico

And last on the list is the most beautiful city in Mexico, Guanajuato, known for its colorful buildings and fun energy.

The city has been recognized as a Unesco World Heritage site due to its architecture, winding streets, and mines located under the city. As well as its crucial role in the Mexican Revolution.

When you’re not catching up on the rich history of Guanajuato, you can immerse yourself in the city’s culture with these activities:

    • walking around the city
    • dining on the tasty foods
    • or join in on the great festivals that are thrown every year!
