Tips for First Time Flying Internationally Alone
Leave Plenty of Time Between Connections
First on the list of flying hacks comes before even booking your flight. Many international flights have connecting flights, so you want to ensure you have enough time to reach the correct terminal.
This is especially important in case you need to go through security again, which is likely when landing in a new country. (Note: If you’re flying domestically, you won’t need to go through security again).
Choose a layover of at least an hour & a half to ensure you reach your connecting flight in time. Or, research which terminal each flight is located at to better understand how long it takes to get to your next flight.
Pick the Right Seat on the Plane
Picking the right seat on the plane ride is vital for the most optimal ride. Now, there’s no such thing as a perfect seat; it just depends on your desired experience.
The aisle seat is ideal for getting up without bothering anyone & potentially having some extra legroom. Whereas the window is perfect for first-time travelers because of the incredible view. Plus, you can use the plane wall as a pillow to get better sleep.
Now, personally speaking, the middle seat is the worst of them all. No view or extra legroom & you are sandwiched between two others. So 10 out of 10 would not recommend the middle seat for an international flight.
Make Sure to Get Travel Insurance
Should you get travel insurance? Is it even worth it? And the short answer is YES!
Travel insurance is a must, especially if traveling abroad, because unexpected things happen no matter how much you plan. For example, luggage lost, flights canceled, an emergency, etc.; numerous reasons may prevent the trip from happening or cause a negative experience.
Save yourself money, worry & stress by getting some travel insurance. In the best-case scenario, you won’t need it; worst case, you’re covered if you do.
Check-In Early
One of the top pro air travel tips is to check in early. Now, this seems like something you can do when you arrive at the airport. But trust me, you’ll save so much time by checking in early.
Most airlines allow you to check in 24 hours before your flight. You can download the airline’s app & check in that way. The airline apps are also a great way to track your flight & get information on terminal or flight changes.

Don’t Overpack Your Carry-On
My very first time flying, I overpacked my carry-on. And you may think, how can you overpack your carry-on? By packing it so full, it won’t fit into the overhead cabin.
That’s exactly what I did & it was a nightmare.
Save yourself the embarrassment, and DO NOT overpack your carry-on bag. The standard carry-on luggage size is 22” (length) x 14” (width) x 9” (height).
Wear Comfortable Clothing
When flying, especially internationally, you’ll want to wear something comfortable & versatile. You’ll be on the flight for a while, so breathable and stretchy clothes are ideal. And because of the fluctuating temperatures, wearing layers (but not too many) is a good idea.
So, for instance, a sweatshirt is perfect. You’ll have something to keep you warm, and when you get hot, you can strip down. Plus, you can use that sweatshirt as a pillow!
Additional Clothing Tips:
- Wear easily removable shoes for security
- Wear socks (you don’t want to be walking around security barefoot)
- Don’t wear too many layers. All these layers make it super challenging to get through security.
Get to Airport Early
As I mentioned earlier, flying alone can be stressful! However, you can reduce that anxiety by arriving at the airport early. This allows for delays like long security lines, terminal changes, etc.
For domestic flights, arrive at least 2 hours before the flight; for international flights, arrive at least 3 hours beforehand. This may seem like a lot of time, but I’m telling you, it will go by quickly.
Make the Security Process as Smooth as Possible
Getting through security might be the most challenging part of the whole process. So naturally, it’s best to make it as smooth as possible.
Firstly, research what needs to be taken out of your bag during the process. In most cases, laptops, belts, shoes, phones, and occasionally jewelry must be removed.
With all that in mind, head to security as soon as you get checked in. Avoid waiting because the lines can get unexpectedly long, especially if traveling during a busy holiday, and you don’t want to get stuck.

Find the Perfect Spot to Chill
So, after you’re through security, go find your gate. Once located & if you have extra time, use it to go to the bathroom or get food or beverages. Afterward, find a spot by your gate to chill until your plane boards.
Look for spots that have outlets and are close to the plane entrance.
Flight Safety
While it may be tempting to space out when the flight attendant goes over flight safety, pay attention to what they’re saying, especially if flying abroad. Hopefully, you’ll never have to implement any of the safety precautions. Still, it’s good to know what to do in an emergency.
Don’t Forget Essential Items
The next tip for first-time flying internationally alone is to make an essential list of everything you need while traveling. Of course, these essentials vary depending on the person, but here is a list of items I always make sure to have in my carry-on.
- A pen
- A reusable water bottle
- Hand sanitizer & hand lotion (small bottle)
- Phone charger
- Lip balm
- Passport & other important documents (plus copies of each document)
- Wallet
- Headphones
Bonus air travel tip: Keep all essential items in an easily accessible place. You’ll be reaching for them often during the trip.

Download Your Entertainment Beforehand
Unfortunately, flying can get boring, especially when sitting around waiting for your plane. So, download or bring items to keep you entertained. (Bring more than you think you’ll need because you might run out.)
Here are entertainment options to download or bring:
- Audiobooks
- Podcasts
- Music
- TV/movies
- Physical books or magazines
- Journal
- Laptop/tablet
*Don’t forget to download them before boarding the flight! Try to do it the night before.*
Have a Plan to Reach Your Destination Once You Land
And lastly, this tip for first-time flying internationally alone is to have a plan for getting to your accommodations once you land. After such a long flight, figuring out how you will leave the airport can be difficult. You don’t want to be scammed or overcharged for a ride, but you also want to get to your destination promptly.
So, have an idea ahead of time of how you’ll reach your next destination. Research the best ways to catch a ride from the airport in the city you landed in.
