Beautiful Places to Travel Without a Passport
Puerto Rico
The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico lies in the Caribbean Sea and is only a short ride from major U.S. cities. As a U.S. territory, Puerto Ricans are American citizens, which means federal and local laws are in effect. However, the legal drinking age is 18.
Known for its warm hospitality, gorgeous views, and delicious food, Puerto Rico is a hotspot for travelers. And it’s no surprise why. The live music and dancing will make you want to make friends with the locals and immerse yourself in the rich culture.
And wait until you taste the food – you’ll never want to leave. Europe, Africa, and the Taíno natives influence much of the cuisine, so you can expect traditional dishes like cocina criolla and arroz con gandules.
All in all, Puerto Rico is an excellent location for adventure, relaxation, thrills, and everything in between.
Popular Areas to Visit in Puerto Rico:
- San Juan
- El Yunque National Forest
- Vieques
- Culebra

U.S. Virgin Islands
Next to Puerto Rico is the beautiful U.S. Virgin Islands. Another passport-free destination for U.S. travelers that offers lovely sandy beaches, delicious food, friendly people, and an experience of a lifetime.
There are so many activities to explore while staying on the islands. Whether you’re snorkeling with the sea turtles or watching them nestling in the sand, you’ll get a glimpse of the unique wildlife on the islands. Or maybe you’re like me and enjoy a nice walk in nature. The Virgin Islands National Park has several trails in the rainforests to enjoy.
Other fun excursions include adventure and water activities like surfing, jet-skiing, swimming with the dolphins, mangrove lagoon tours, and ziplining.
If you happen to be visiting during April, May, June, July, or December, make sure to catch one of the famous Carnival festivals. Carnival is a good time all around, full of dazzling costumes, vibrating music, yummy food, and lots of dancing. This is truly an experience you don’t want to miss.
Excellent Spots to Check Out in the Virgin Islands:
- Saint Thomas
- Saint Croix
- Virgin Islands National Park, St. John
- Cruz Bay, St. John

Hawaii
Talk about paradise right in our backyard! Surprisingly, Hawaii is one of the fifty U.S. states, meaning ALL American citizens can visit without a passport. And it is GORGEOUS.
Unlike any other area in the States, Hawaii’s terrain is full of luscious mountains, insane rainforests, volcanos, and stunning beaches. Hawaii is made up of a chain of eight islands, each offering its own unique experience. Big Island, Maui, Kauai, and Oahu are the largest and most popular of the islands.
Bonus tip: do a little research on which cities you want to visit in Hawaii or make a plan to visit multiple areas for maximum fun!
And if this isn’t enough to get you to hop on a plane, the cuisine here is out of this world. With fresh local ingredients, most food is inspired by many Asian cuisines like Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. And food trucks are super common in Hawaii, so you can find yummy food everywhere.
There is something for every traveler here, whether you want to hike, sunbathe on the beach, or explore the massive landmarks in the state.

American Samoa
This is your place if you want a vacation with fewer crowds. American Samoa, located in the South Pacific, comprises five islands, Tutuila, Aunu’u, Ta’u, Ofu, and Olosega. It isn’t known as well as some other locations on the list, so, naturally, there are not many travelers. This means you get the islands to yourself!
This destination is perfect for unwinding, disconnecting from reality, and connecting with nature. So, American Samoa has some of the best areas to hike in the South Pacific. Several trails on the Tutuila island give you a nice mix of rainforest and coastal views.
Another way to connect with the land is by exploring some of the lovely beaches American Samoa offers. Get your mermaid on and spend some time cooling off in the water. Since you’re on the ocean, take advantage of some exciting water sports like surfing, snorkeling, and more!
Big Tip: Planning is essential if you intend on visiting American Samoa. Activities such as fishing, guided dives, and island tours fill up quickly.
Also, American Samoa is 14 degrees south of the equator. So, December and January are the hot months, and July is the coolest.
