I’m a big advocate for walking to get around in a walkable city. This is for a couple of reasons:
- It’s free! You need absolute zero dollars to walk to and from your destination. If you’re a budget traveler, this is a great way to save on coins.
- The second reason I love walking as a means of transport is that you get to see a lot of the city you’d miss on public transport or even in an Uber or taxi. The streets, buildings, and people going about their day make up the city. And you can learn so much by just taking it all in.
- And lastly, walking is excellent exercise. If you’re anything like me, workouts don’t happen while I’m traveling. I’d rather spend that time sleeping or exploring. So walking makes up for the exercise I miss during my travels.
Cabify in Madrid
Cabify is another rideshare app similar to Uber. You simply download an app, request your ride, and then wait for your driver.
If you’re low on cash, this is a great option. It’s also very environmentally friendly, as Cabify uses eco-friendly cars.
Pricing is comparable with Uber, so make sure to compare before booking.
Bolt in Madrid
Another transportation method besides Uber Madrid is Bolt, a rideshare service. Bolt is similar to Uber and Cabify, where you put in your destination, order your ride and then off you go!

The public transportation in Madrid is fantastic! Super easy to understand and navigate, and most importantly, it’s one of the cheapest ways to get around besides walking.
First, there is the Madrid Metro, one of the largest metro systems in Europe. The metro runs every day from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. If you’re traveling outside of those periods due to an early flight, an Uber is an excellent alternative.
Taxi
Taxis have been around in Madrid for a long time and are a popular mode of transportation. However, taxi rates are slightly higher than rideshare apps like Uber, Cabify, and Bolt.
Luckily, taxis aren’t outrageously expensive like in other parts of the world. So, if you don’t have the time to wait for your Uber ride, definitely hop in a taxi.
Bike Rental
Renting a public bike is a fun way to get around Madrid. You can see the city, get to your destination, and get some exercise all in one go!
There are numerous docking stations around the city where you can get a one, three, or even five-day pass. If you’re brave enough to navigate through traffic, this is an excellent and cheap way to travel in Madrid.
